Lapidary is the art of cutting, shaping, and polishing semi-precious or precious gemstones. If you're a beginner you might be wondering what machines you will need to start your lapidary journey. Using these machines you can create cabochons, specimens, slabs, spheres, etc. 

 

Here are lapidary equipment for beginners:

  1. Slab Saw  
    used to make accurate cross section cuts through large and heavy pieces of semi-precious material, glass, mineral specimens, core samples and other non-metallic material.

  2. Trim saw

    is used to reduce your material to a workable, and approximate shape before proceeding to the grinding, sanding and polishing. 

  3. Cabbing machine

    grinds and polishes preformed slabs and transform them into cabochons.

  4. Flat laps

    are used to grind and polish slabs or other flat surfaces such as crystals, geodes, and can be used for some cabs. They can be either reciprocating or rotary flat laps.

  5. Wet belt sander

    is a multipurpose tool used to shape, clean, sharpen, and smoothen stone or glass.

  6. Sphere machine

     creates a perfect rounded ball of rock or glass.
